Town of Swanzey seeks Director of Planning and Economic Development 

The Town of Swanzey (pop. 7,200) located in southwestern New Hampshire’s Monadnock Region seeks a qualified individual to serve as its next Director of Planning and Economic Development.  Working under the general direction of the Town Administrator and the Board of Selectmen, the Director provides management, leadership, and coordination to the planning, zoning, code enforcement, and economic development activities of the Town. 

Swanzey is the second largest community in Cheshire County, borders the City of Keene, is the home of the Dillant Hopkins Airport.  Swanzey has recently approved several significant business and multi-family development projects and expects continued growth over the next decade.  The next Director will play a critical role in furthering Swanzey’s business friendly reputation through its economic development initiatives, while also helping to balance its small town atmosphere.  Priorities for the next Director include working with the Planning Board on implementing the Town’s recently updated Master Plan, retaining current businesses and attracting new businesses, reviewing and streamlining the Town’s various ordinances and codes, and managing several on-going projects. 

This position provides support to a number of citizen committees and boards, including attending evening meetings routinely.  The Director also serves as the Town’s liaison with local business and planning groups, such as the chamber of commerce and regional planning commission. 

The ideal candidate to join our team in this supervisory position will have a degree in planning, community development, environmental studies, public administration, or a closely related field supplemented by five years of local government or regional planning experience.  Desired skills in the next Director include proven interpersonal, written and oral communication skills, a positive attitude, leadership ability, project management, grant writing and administration, and ability to work as part of a team.  The Director oversees the Town’s building and code operations through supervision of the Code Enforcement Officer and Health Officer.
