Swanzey Center Sidewalk Improvement Project Update #1

The Town of Swanzey began Phase 3 of the Swanzey Center Sidewalk Improvement Project in the middle of May and the project is more than 50% complete. This project will construct 1,900 linear feet of new asphalt sidewalk along Sawyers Crossing Road from where the sidewalk currently ends to the Cresson Covered Bridge.

Work so far has included removal of trees, planting of some replacement trees, and reconstruction of the Sawyers Crossing and Causeway Road intersection. The new sidewalk area has been excavated, with gravel sub base installed and compacted to prepare for paving. Some landscaping has been completed with more to follow after the paving. Jay Roy Excavating has been contracted to pave the sidewalk, which has been delayed slightly due to recent weather events that have damaged other Town infrastructure. Pedestrians should use caution during construction, which is expected to be completed in August depending on weather.

This project is funded partially by a grant of $97,990 from the Monadnock Alliance for Sustainable Transportation through the Complete Streets Implementation Grant Program, which focuses on street designs that balance the needs of people walking, bicycling, driving a car, using wheelchairs or other mobility devices, etc. The grant will be supplemented by labor and materials from the Town Public Works Department.

Questions or concerns should be directed to Director of Public Works Joe DiRusso at jdirusso@swanzeynh.gov or 352-7116.
