Town of Swanzey seeks Director of Public Works

The Town of Swanzey (pop. 7,200) located in southwestern New Hampshire’s Monadnock Region seeks a qualified individual to serve as its next Director of Public Works.  Working under the general direction of the Board of Selectmen and Town Administrator, the Director provides management, leadership, and coordination of the Town’s various public works functions. 

The Director supervises operations including road maintenance and construction, buildings and grounds, bridges, snow plowing, cemeteries, and three Town owned dams.  Not including employee benefits, the Director oversees budgets over $800,000 and a multi-million dollar capital budget.  The Director supervises seven full-time employees and a number of part-time and seasonal employees.  This position also oversees fleet management for a number of trucks and pieces of equipment including a road grader, backhoe, loader, four dump trucks, and a number of pick-up trucks and pieces of small equipment.

Swanzey has an area of 45 square miles with roughly 65 miles of Town maintained roads, including 11 miles of dirt road, and an additional 9 miles of State roads that the Town maintains in the winter.  The Town owns 11 bridges, including four wooden covered bridges and two bridges on the Municipal Bridge Red List.  The Town also owns and maintains two dams around Wilson Pond and one at Swanzey Lake. 

The ideal candidate to join our team in this department head level position will have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a closely related field and eight years of construction management/engineering experience, including at least three years in a supervisory position.  Master Roads Scholar designation preferred.  Equivalent combination of skills and experience may be considered.  The Director is strongly preferred to live within approximately 20 miles of the DPW Garage or be able to move to do so within 6 months.  Desired skills in the next Director include proven written and oral communication skills, computer skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to lead a team to accomplish both short-term and long-term goals.
